The Oil City Derick floated the name of B. F. Jones as a potential candidate in the 1888 presidential race, but the elder steel statesman opted to concentrate on his steel business and Pittsburgh community interests. Directorships in banks, coal and coke companies, iron mines, insurance concerns, the Duquesne Club, and non-profits filled his time. He served on the committee for the Allegheny Cemetery incorporation and the 1888 Pittsburgh Centennial Committee along with Andrew Carnegie and Judge Thomas Mellon.

Jones authored the article “Protection” in the North American Review, advocating tariffs to protect the American workingman. Iron Age, the industry newspaper, dubbed him the “most respected man in the iron trade,” and Carnegie referred to him as “Nestor,” the sage Athenian described by Homer in The Iliad. Labor joined Jones in its support of the tariff as a defense against foreign competition. When Jones traveled to Washington to lobby, the hotel doorman greeted him with a snicker: “I think I smell a tariff coming.” Pittsburgh Limerick-writer Arthur Burgoyne joked about Jones:
